Bells Drop Game One Against Corvallis

07/05/2018 8:24 PM

It took the bats a while to warm up on a toasty summer night in Bellingham, Wash.

Once the Corvallis lumber got going though, the Bells couldn’t keep pace in a 5-1 loss on Thursday night.

Both starting pitchers went four innings without allowing a single hit, but both teams would crack into the hit and the run column in the fifth inning.

Bellingham starter Nick Nastrini was able to work out of some minor jams early in the ballgame. It looked like Nastrini was going to move right past a leadoff double after the Bells completed the strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out double play that cleared the bases.

However, Trace Tammaro posed as a threat all by himself, hitting in the eight-spot for Corvallis. The Knights’ first baseman crushed a first pitch fastball which soared over the right-field wall to give Corvallis a 1-0 lead.

The Bells answered with a no-doubt blast of their own as Grant Holman got ahold of a 1-1 pitch which he sent well over the wall in left field to tie things up 1-1.

Nastrini’s day would conclude with a no-decision after allowing just three hits and striking out one. Carson Olson took over in the top of the sixth and he was able come out of a bases-loaded jam unscathed.

The right-hander struck out the first batter he saw but found himself in quite the pickle after hitting a batter, allowing a single, and giving up a walk. With two down and the Bellingham faithful cheering on the 3-2 pitch, the umpire pulled one fist back and pushed the other forward signaling a strikeout to end the inning.

However, the top of the seventh was not as fortunate for Bellingham. Tammaro led off the inning with a solo shot to right filed that barely squeaked over the wall behind a leaping Connor Mack in right field.

After walking a pair of batters in the bottom of the seventh, Theron Kay entered the ballgame. Zach Needham was charged with an error and the Bells couldn’t escape from danger as they had all game, after a pair of RBI came in on a single to right field.

The Knights were able to add another insurance run in the top of the ninth before shutting down Bellingham in the bottom half of the inning to end the ballgame 5-1.

The Bells will look to end their four-game losing skid and split the two-game series on Friday night. Corvallis and Bellingham only meet three times this season and this contest will serve as the tie-breaker for the season series.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 pm.
