Bells Add Pair of Impressive Newcomers

02/26/2020 12:14 PM

BELLINGHAM, Wash.- The Bells are excited to announce the arrivals of sophomore catcher Michael Cesar and freshman pitcher Matt Haley to the 2020 roster.

Cesar reigns from Juneau, Alaska, and attends Pacific Lutheran University. Prior to his strong freshman season, Cesar lettered in all four years at Juneau-Douglass High School and was a three-time captain and MVP for the Crimson bears.

“Michael has enjoyed a fair number of accolades in his young career, being named the Alaska Gatorade Player of the Year as a prep athlete and finding almost immediate success at Pacific Lutheran,” said Bells General Manager Stephanie Morrell. “Beyond his obvious talent behind the plate and ability to put the ball in play offensively, we love the fact Michael has two years under his belt at PLU, where he’s been an active member of their lineup both offensively and defensively. With his natural talent and the high number of reps he’s received, we know he’ll come to Bellingham this summer ready to help our team, especially behind the plate. We couldn’t be more excited to have Michael as part of the 2020 roster.”

Cesar appeared in 41 games behind the dish in 2019, ending his freshman year with a total of 165 putouts and a batting average of .250.  Cesar possesses both offensive and defensive skill with a strong, accurate arm and an explosive bat speed.

Joining Cesar this summer is left-handed pitcher Matt Haley from the University of New Mexico.  Haley embarks on his first collegiate season with the Lobos this spring after graduating from Joshua High School in Joshua, TX.

“Matt is an athletic left-handler who keeps hitters guessing,” said Morrell. “He has a solid three pitch mix and good velocity. After a season with the Lobos, we expect Matt to be a big contributor on the Bells pitching staff.”

Haley has a perfect game to his credit which he earned in his final high school season, along with three no-hitters. During his 2019 high school playoff outing, Haley pitched 13 strikeouts in what ultimately became the senior’s first perfect game with no hits, no walks and not a single hit batter.
