The Bells Hold On To Playoff Hopes With Win Over Victoria

08/02/2017 11:55 PM

The Bellingham Bells defeated the Victoria HarbourCats 6-2 Wednesday evening at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria.

The Bells enter the final three games of the season just 0.5 games behind Wenatchee and Victoria, with a three game series left against Wenatchee at home, to end the regular season.

The Bells used a four run top of the ninth inning to defeat the HarbourCats. The Bells entered the top of the ninth tied at two. Chase Illig broke the tie with an RBI single, his WCL single season record, 52nd RBI to give the club a 3-2 lead. Max Flower added two key insurance runs on an RBI double, increasing the Bells lead to 5-2. Colin Ridley capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly that brought home Kody Matthews. Bellingham led 6-2 going into the bottom half of the ninth.

Bellingham's bullpen tossed five and two-third innings of one run baseball, as Trevor DeLaite, Keenan Lum and Josh Zavisubin combined to shut the door in relief of Merle Rowan-Kennedy, the Bells starter who tossed three and a third innings allowing one run. DeLaite worked two and two-thirds, surrendering just one run while fanning two.

Keenan Lum earned his win of the season, dealing two scoreless frames while puching out three HarbourCats. Josh Zavisubin fired a scoreless ninth inning to perserve the Bells 13th win of the second half.

Austin Shenton hammered his fourth homerun of the season to give the Bells an early 2-1 lead. Shenton, Brendan McClary and Illig each had three hits for the Bells, providing nine of the 12 hits for Bellingham on the evening.
