The Bellingham Bells outdueled the Bend Elks for a 1-0 victory at Vince Genna Stadium.
The Bells crossed the only run of the ballgame in the 10th. Shane Hanon started the rally with a one out single. After Bradon Shirley struck out, Hanon stole second and moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher with Andru Cardenas at the plate. Cardenas slapped a single into centerfield, plating Hanon and driving in the Bells winning run.
Both teams had good opportunities to score but Bend had the best chance of the ballgame in the bottom half of the ninth. The threat began when Jack Anderson reached on a Jake Vieth error. Anderson moved to second on a sac bunt. Jarod Gonzalez was walked by Bells reliever Josh Zavisubin (3-0) to put runners on first and second for Tommy Lane. Lane grounded out for the second out of the ninth but moved each runner ninety feet closer. The Bells would intentionally walk Billy King to face Christian Jones. Vieth atoned for his earlier error, making a challenging stop at first and flipping to Zavisubin to retire Jones, leave the bases full, and get the Bells out of the inning
Gio Lopez earned his first start of the season, and the Arizona State product tossed five innings of shutout baseball. Jeff Gelinas fanned three Elk batters in his two scoreless innings on the bump and Zavisubin earned the win, firing three shutout innings and striking out two.
