Bells Fall to Wenatchee

08/06/2016 10:15 PM

The Bellingham Bells (31-22) fell to the Wenatchee AppleSox (19-34) 9-6 at Paul Thomas Field in Wenatchee Saturday night.

Wenatchee used two huge innings, five runs in the first and four more runs in the fourth to overwhelm Bellingham.

Bellingham got on the board in the first inning. Andru Cardenas walked and came around to score on a Dean Lawson RBI double. Jake Vieth capped the rally with an RBI single that plated Lawson. Bellingham led 2-0 heading to the bottom half of the first.

Joey Matulovich (2-4) earned the start for Bellingham and the 2016 all-star struggled, allowing five runs in an inning and one-third for the Bells. The Cal product was tagged with the loss.

David Stealy, Hunter Haworth and Brian Way worked together to toss final six and two third innings for Bellingham. Bellingham native Stealy pitched two and two third innings, allowing four runs. Second year Bell Haworth looked sharp in his two scoreless innings on the bump, fanning four. And Way didn’t allow a hit in his scoreless seventh and eighth innings on the hill.

Trailing 9-2 heading to the sixth inning, Bellingham crossed four runs. Matt Ruff singled and moved to second on a Justin Polzin single. Ruff scored on a Christian Jones ground ball that skipped by Wenatchee’s Michael Toglia. Landon Riker finished the rally in the style, with a long three run homerun over the left field fence. Riker’s first homerun of the summer pulled the Bells to within three at 9-6.

Bellingham will begin a three game playoff series with the first half champions, the Victoria HarbourCats, on Tuesday August 9th at Joe Martin Field.
