Three Players to Join the Bells from Western Oregon
Bellingham, Wash., – The Bellingham Bells are excited to announce the arrival of three Western Oregon Wolves for the 2020 summer campaign. Sophomore twins Derek Maiben and Jacob Maiben along with junior Mike Peterson are on their way to Bellingham.
The Maiben twins bring enticing chemistry to the Bells. The brothers played together growing up in Newberg, Ore., and both were three-year letter winners at Newberg High School.
“Derek and Jacob Maiben are bringing a unique dynamic to our team,” said Bells Pitching Coach/Recruiting Coordinator Jim Clem. “They are not only brothers, but they are twins! They are both known for being incredibly focused and mentally tough… and know only one way to play the game, which is all out, all of the time!”
Jacob stands at 5-foot-9-inches, 170lbs. and is positioned in right field. He started 30 games and appeared in 39 during his freshman season. He finished with an outstanding 1.000 fielding percentage and a slugging percentage of .544.
“Jacob is an exceptional outfielder who can play all three outfield positions,” said Clem. “He gets terrific jumps off the bat and can really throw. He’s also a good offensive player, who last season lead his team in hitting as a freshman. Jacob knows how to grind out at bats. He’s also an excellent base runner. Jacob will be a great asset to our team!”
Derek is 5-foot-10-inches, 175lbs. and, like his twin, is versatile – playing multiple positions, primarily short stop and third base. Last season his batting average was .387, the second best on the team.
“Derek is a true utility infielder that has played a lot of shortstop. His range is exceptional, and he has a strong arm too,” said Clem. “Derek is a gritty player, a very competitive hitter who put up some solid numbers as a freshman last season. He’s also a smart base runner. He’s a tough competitor, his attitude and skills are top notch. Derek is going to be a great guy to have on our team.”
Right-handed pitcher Mike Peterson will join his Western Oregon teammates on their journey to Bellingham. Peterson is in his first season with the Wolves, after transferring from Walla Walla Community College.
“Mike Peterson is a big RHP, who has some experience under his belt and knows how to pitch. He’s a hard thrower, with a tough slider, and change-up. Besides being able to pitch well, he’s also known for having a great attitude, being a hard worker, and being a great teammate! We expect Mike will be an important piece of our staff.”
Peterson brings a large stature to the mound at 6-foot-5-inches and 200lbs. Formerly with the Walla Walla Sweets in 2018, Peterson won WCL Pitcher of the Week honors three times that season.
Peterson and the Maiben brothers will bring exciting baseball to Bellingham this summer.
The Bells home opener is June 2 at Joe Martin Field.
