Swaim cruises through five innings in Bells 4-2 win and sweep of the Lefties

The story of this game was consistent with the theme of this series, which has been stellar pitching from the entire Bells staff. We saw more of that today, especially from Bells starter Everett Swaim, who delivered five innings of no-hit baseball and kept the Lefties scoreless.

In the home half of the first inning, Coleman Schmidt took the first pitch he saw and sent it off the right field wall. Easily trotting into 3rd base with a leadoff triple. Unfortunately, the Lefties catcher was able to make a great play on a Dean West bunt. Stopping Coleman Schmidt halfway in between 3rd and home to make a crucial first out of the inning.

The Bells would cash in on their next scoring opportunity in the second inning. With two outs in the inning. Garner Christensen ripped a double down the right field line to score Riley Parker and Max Hartman. Putting the Bells ahead 2-0.

Matt Molina took over for Swaim in the sixth inning. In his third outing of the season, he found his groove. Striking out the side to take the Bells combined no-hitter into the seventh inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, Coleman Schmidt utilized his wheels again after leading off the inning with a single. After stealing 2nd base, Andrew Valdez was able to advance Schmidt to 3rd base on a single to center field. With speed at 1st and 3rd base, the double steal was successful on both ends, with Valdez luring a throw to 2nd base from the catcher and the second baseman receiving that throw couldn’t catch Schmidt at home plate. Making the score 3-0.

The seventh inning would belong to Thomas Urbina. He was unable to keep the no-hitter going after giving up a leadoff single that snuck through the right side of the infield, but the shutout was still intact heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Bells were able to secure one last insurance run after Nate Kirkpatrick scored on a wild pitch to make the score 4-0.

Port Angeles was finally able to break through with their first runs of the series in the eighth inning when Kadden Drew surrendered a 2-out, 2 RBI, single. Drew was able to get out of the inning on the following pitch, with the score at 4-2.

Trevor Moore came on for the top of the ninth and was able to retire the side in order to get the save for the Bells.

The Bells (31-16) have the opportunity to play spoiler in their final home series of the season against the second-half leading Wenatchee AppleSox (35-13), with game one on August 1, at 6:35 p.m.
