BELLINGHAM, WA — Monday, April 1, the Bellingham Bells announced the addition of Mason Chien, Broc Redenius, Tomas Urbina and Lathan Haywood.

Mason Chien is in his second season for the University of Fraser Valley. Last year he threw a  2.62 ERA in 48 innings and struck out 42 batters. 

He has spent time with a travel team, the Langley Blaze, of the British Columbia Premier Baseball League. In 2022 he pitched 28.1 innings for the Blaze and struck out 29 batters with a 3.21 ERA.

“Mason is a firm strike thrower who has summer ball experience. He is known to be a great teammate and a competitor who will be a great addition to our pitching staff,” Bells General Manager, Stephanie Morrell, said.

Representing the Whalley Major Allstars in 2016, Chein won the Little League British Columbia Championship and an opportunity to play for a bid to the Little League World Series. Whalley would lose to Hastings who would represent Canada but the run by Chien’s team was one to remember.

Broc Redenius is a freshman at Cal State Bakersfield where he has four appearances out of the bullpen for the Roadrunners this spring

Out of Bakersfield Christian High School he was an All-Area selection in his senior year. A two-way star in high school, Redenius played shortstop and outfield while also pitching. He recently competed at the Connie Mack World Series helping the Southern California Renegades earn a 3rd place finish.

“Broc is a promising young pitcher who we’ve heard good things about,” Morrell said. “We think he will be a great fit for the staff given his ability to compete and his track record of success. He’s known to be a great teammate who will lead by example this summer and we know fans will love watching him, too.

Tomas Urbina is back in blue for the Bells this summer. Urbina was a star out of the bullpen where he made the second most appearances by any pitcher last season. In his 25 innings for the Bells he totaled four wins and a stellar 1.80 ERA.

At the University of the Incarnate Word this spring Urbina has pitched five innings out of the pen. Before becoming a Cardinal, Urbina was a Puma at Paradise Valley Community College. There he picked up 10 saves in two seasons with a 3.49 ERA.

“We’re thrilled Tomas is returning for a second summer,” Morrell said. “He is a fantastic representation of the Bells and the culture we want our athletes to embrace. He works hard, competes, and throws strikes. He is excited to return to the Bells this summer and we are thrilled to have him.”

Lathan Haywood is the final right-handed addition for the Bells pitching staff. Haywood is a freshman at Edmonds College where he has picked up three wins in one start and six other appearances this season.

Out of Olympic High School Haywood was an All-Olympic League selection his senior year. Haywood has thrown a 2.63 ERA and a 1.02 WHIP this spring, all which have been part of a great start to his collegiate career.

“Lathan has had a solid spring at Edmonds College and has a tremendous amount of potential. We’ve heard only good things and are excited to see what he can do on the mound this summer,” Morrell said.
