Bells lose series to Lefties after 1-0 loss

The Bellingham Bells lost 1-0 to the Port Angeles Lefties on Sunday, July 21, at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The win secured a series win for Port Angeles, taking two of three games in Bellingham. The only run yesterday was scored unearned against the losing pitcher Josh Flaugher.
Flaugher had a quality start, he went six innings for the first time this season and only allowed three hits and a walk. In the fourth inning, Roberto Nunez reached as Nate Kirkpatrick bobbled a ground ball at third base. Nunez then advanced to third base on a single by Brett Haggerty. The go-ahead and eventual winning run scored on Kosei Suzuki grounding into a near double play fielder’s choice.
The Lefties would hold that 1-0 lead from there on out despite many attempts by the Bells to score runners. In total nine runners were left on base for the Bells and many others were either caught stealing or were part of a double play or fielder’s choice. The Bells had runners in scoring position six times but could not bring any home.
Callum Young pitched another phenomenal relief appearance where he would only give up one walk in two no-hit innings. Lane Simonsen got back to his dominant ways when he sat down the Lefties in order in the ninth inning while tallying a strikeout.
The Bells had runners on first and second in the bottom of the ninth. Just like Saturday’s game though they could not bring in the tying nor go-ahead runs. The Bells lost 1-0 with the only run being unearned due to one of the Bells two errors yesterday.
Overall the team had four hits which came from Roman Martin who reached safely all four times yesterday on one hit and three walks. Gabe Henderson had a base hit and two walks. Gavin Long had a base hit batting in the two spot yesterday. Jacob Mejia also had a 1 for 4 day with a double.
Tuesday the Bellingham Bells play the Kelowna Falcons at 6:35 p.m. This game begins a three-game series between two North Division teams. The Bells are 6-6 in the second half of the season and 23-16 overall.
