Bells walk to a 10-5 win over Kelowna

The Bellingham Bells beat the Kelowna Falcons 10-5 on Wednesday, July 24, at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The Bells were outhit 12 hits to five but the Falcons walked 13 Bells and hit five batters to aid in the double digit scoring night for the Bells.

Will Anderson made the start but would only go three innings in it. Anderson allowed three walks and three hits for one earned run in his fourth start of the season. He also picked up two strikeouts. 

Down 1-0, the Bells took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the third inning with two runs after Jacob Mejia was hit by a pitch and Conner Smith hit a sacrifice fly. The Bells matched their run total with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning on Gavin Long’s RBI groundout and another sacrifice fly, this time from Nate Kirkpatrick. Another run was added to a 4-1 lead in the sixth when Roman Martin hit into a double play that scored Trent Mallonee from third.

The relief pitcher Devyn Hernandez would have a 5-1 lead after his three innings of scoreless work. Hernandez went on to earn another win, his third, in three innings where he gave up two hits and two walks with one strikeout. Lane Simonsen pitched a clean seventh inning and the right-handed pitcher now has a 2.51 ERA. 

In the bottom of the seventh inning the Bells scored five runs off of three walks, two hit-by-pitches and one hit in that inning. Up 10-1, the Falcons tagged reliever Callum Young for his first four runs allowed of the season. Marques Brown would finish the eighth and begin the ninth with the Bells leading 10-5. Brown grabbed the first two outs of the ninth but Nic Peterson entered after Brown gave up back-to-back singles to Kelowna. Peterson only needed one pitch to finish the win.

Trent Mallonee led the way with two hits on offense and three runs scored. Mallonee stole three bases and now leads the league in stolen bases with 20. Gavin Long went 1 for 3 with an RBI. Gabe Henderson went 1 for 2 with two runs scored and one RBI. Bryce Johnson had a 1 for 4 night and drove in one run while scoring two himself.

The Bells with the 10-5 win secured a series victory over Kelowna and look to sweep the Falcons tomorrow night at 6:35 p.m. The Bells then travel to Nanaimo to play the NightOwls in three games this weekend.
