Bells fall in extras to Lefties

The Bellingham Bells began their three-game series vs the Port Angeles Lefties with a 3-2 extra-innings loss Friday, July 4 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. Trevor Moore led Bellingham with a six-inning quality start, but the Lefties rallied late and took advantage of an error in the 10th to win.
Bellingham scored first in the second inning after loading the bases on a Nate Kirkpatrick single, an error and a walk from Aiden Aguayo. A wild pitch allowed Kirkpatrick to score from third but Nico Azpilcueta was caught in a rundown trying to score from second and ended the inning.
Trevor Moore had his fireworks in his Fourth of July start and went his first five innings scoreless. In the sixth he surrendered one run on a leadoff walk followed by a sacrifice bunt and a pair of singles. He finished six innings with a no-decision after striking out seven Lefties while walking two and giving up four hits.
Chihiro Sato entered the seventh inning in relief and gave Port Angeles the lead on three hits in the inning. Sato finished two relief innings with the one run scored on three hits and one walk allowed.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Bells had two runners on with Blake Balsz at the plate. On the first pitch he saw, Balsz grounded into a double play and ended the potential rally.
The Bells were able to keep the momentum rolling in the ninth and loaded the bases on three-straight walks. Aguayo hit a fly out that wasn’t deep enough to score the tying run. With one out, Brock Sell hit a ground ball that could’ve been a double play, but his speed beat the throw to first and the Bells tied the game 2-2.
In the top of the tenth inning, the Lefties scored a run against Tyler Biddinger, who had entered in the ninth, after Chris Clement committed an error at first base that allowed the go-ahead run to stand on second with no outs. Port Angeles utilized a sacrifice bunt and an RBI single to take the lead 3-2.
Camden Gillespie led off the bottom of the 10th with a triple. After a fly, Gillespie otried to advance on a ground ball during the next at bat and was thrown out at home. The Bells rally ended their and their comeback hopes were crushed as they lost 3-2 in extras.
Noah Meffert made his home debut and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Kirkpatrick was 1-for-3 and scored two runs. Sell carried the lone RBI in the game despite an 0-for-5 performance at the plate.
The Bells look to bounce back tomorrow night against the Lefties in a 6:35 p.m. first pitch at the Joe. Bellingham (19-12) are still first in the North Division while Port Angeles (12-16) sits at seventh in the North.
