The Bellingham Bells lost their second game in Port Angeles 13-6 versus the Lefties Wednesday, July 23 at Civic Field in Port Angeles, WA. The Lefties scored nine runs from the sixth inning and beyond to tied the three-game series on the Olympic Peninsula and set up a rubber match tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.

Devyn Hernandez got the start and allowed an uncharacteristic four runs in three innings. The All-Star pitcher had given up eight total runs in nearly 33 innings prior to tonight.

The Bells offense was able to keep up with the Lefties with a run in the second on an RBI by Noah Figuered and two runs scoring in the third on Noah Cassie’s two-run home run.

In the top of the sixth, Brock Sell tied the game 4-4 on a single to right field. That tie didn’t last long as Lathan Haywood surrendered four runs in the bottom of the inning.

An error and passed ball gave Bellingham two runs in the seventh to trail 8-6, buy Haywood’s struggles continued and he loaded the bases before gaining an out in the bottom of the seventh. Tyler Biddinger took over and all three baserunners went on to score in the inning, giving Port Angeles an 11-6 lead.

Haywood gained three outs over two innings and allowed seven runs on four hits and two walks. He has now allowed 11 runs in his last two outings after pitching his first two outings scoreless.

Biddinger gained all but one out in the eighth and allowed two runs. Jared Hardie finished tonight’s pitching for Bellingham and the Bells lost 13-6.

On offense Bellingham had eight hits with no one have a multi-hit game. Cassie led the Bells with two RBI on his first home run of the season.

The Bells will look to earn a series win tomorrow before heading home for six straight days of baseball at Joe Martin Field. It will be a run of nine straight days playing for Bellingham to finish the month of July.

Bellingham already holds the top seed in the North Division playoffs, which give them home field advantage for the opening round, but will need to be the best team in the North overall to potentially host the North Division championship game or the WCL Championship.

The Bells are 28-16 and hold a 2.5-game lead over the second place Wenatchee AppleSox (24-17) who have won their last seven straight. This weekend Bellingham plays three non-league games that do not count towards WCL standings but face Kelowna Monday–Wednesday in a divisional matchup.
