Bells fall short to drop series vs Falcons
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Standings
The Bellingham Bells lost 8-7 against the Kelowna Falcons to drop the three-game series Wednesday, July 30 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The Falcons had a seven-run sixth inning that led to their eventual one-run win.
Gavin Long got the Bells offense started early with an RBI triple in the first inning. Rob Jacobsen scored Long on a base hit and the Bells had a 2-0 lead. Cal Young, tonight’s starting pitcher, allowed one run in his four innings while striking out six Falcons.
Miles Chandler entered in the fifth and pitched a 1-2-3 inning, and the Bells took a 5-1 lead with a three-run bottom of the fifth thanks to a bases-loaded triple from Logan Degroot.
Chandler didn’t sail as smoothly through the sixth inning and after allowing a run was relieved by Jared Hardie, who earned the loss tonight, with the bases loaded. The Falcons went on to tie the game and then pull ahead on a three-run home run to lead 8-5.
Will Franklin tossed a hitless top of the seventh and the Bells chipped one run away after the seventh inning stretch on Aiden Aguayo’s RBI single. Chihiro Sato pitched the eighth scoreless and the Bells loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning threatening to score.
Koen Van ‘T Klooster entered and retired Degroot on a foul pop up to the catcher to strand the bases loaded in an 8-6 ballgame. Sato finished another half-inning scoreless and in the ninth Noah Meffert brought one run to cut the lead to one.
With the tying and go-ahead runners in scoring position, the Bells committed two straight outs to end their comeback hopes and fall to 29-19. The Bells lost the six-game season series to the Falcons with four losses to Kelowna.
Jacobsen led the Bells with four hits and collected an RBI and run scored. The Bells 15-hit effort saw Aguayo, Meffert and Long all have two-hit nights. But the offense couldn’t find the big swing to shift the scoreboard back to their favor.
The Bells have tomorrow off and will play Wenatchee Friday–Sunday in a weekend series that could drastically change the outlook of the WCL playoffs, which begin August 8th. Bellingham is tied for first place in the North Division alongside the Edmonton Riverhawks with Victoria just a game back and Wenatchee behind by two games.
August 4–6 is the final home stand for the Bells ahead of the playoffs. So come support your Bells at bellstickets.com.
