The Bellingham Bells lost the opening game of a three-game series against the Nanaimo NightOwls 3-2 in 10 innings Monday, August 4 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The Bells look to bounce back tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. as they continue the final home stand of the regular season.

Miles Chandler got the start for Bellingham and surrendered a leadoff home run to the first batter he face. However, he settled in and pitched the next four inning scoreless while allowing four hits and one walk and striking out three NightOwls.

The Bells were held scoreless throughout Chandler’s five innings despite loading the bases in the third inning and having at least one baserunner in each of the first five innings. Nanaimo doubled their lead in the top of the sixth against Dylan Huntsman who allowed two hits and walks while striking out one.

Bellingham got on the scoreboard on a run in the bottom of the sixth after Noah Meffert doubled and scored on two wild pitches by Richtter Castillo. Lathan Haywood took over in the seventh and pitched the next two inning scoreless picking up two strikeouts without allowing a hit in his relief appearance.

In the bottom of the seventh, Gavin Long drew a leadoff walk and moved into scoring position on steal and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Noah Cassie doubled to left field to tie the game 2-2.

Neither side could break the tie and after Colt Peterson finished a 1-2-3 ninth with two strikeouts Cal Young took the mound for the 10th inning. Young surrendered a leadoff walk and two bunt singles to load the bases. One scored on a sacrifice fly and the Bells trailed 3-2 with their backs against the wall.

Noah Meffert and Noah Figuered began the 10th with two singles to put the tying run into scoring position. Gavin Long walked to load the bases with two outs but no runs would score and the Bells fell 3-2.

Noah Cassie collected two hits with an RBI tonight while Noah Meffert went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored. Tomorrow the Bells look to even the series against the NightOwls as Bellingham sits two games back of the North Division lead at 31-21.
