Degroot’s big swing leads to 3-2 win
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Standings
The Bellingham Bells defeated the Nanaimo NightOwls 3-2 Tuesday, August 5 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. Logan Degroot picked up three RBIs with a bases-loaded double in the fourth inning to lead the Bells to a series-tying win that sets up a rubber match tomorrow at 6:35 p.m.
The West Coast League All-Star Preston Watkins began the game on the mound for Bellingham and tossed three scoreless inning while collecting five strikeouts. Watkins gave up four walks and one hit on his way to a no-decision tonight.
Josh Flaugher tossed a scoreless top of the fourth before Degroot’s big swing in the bottom of the inning that scored Blake Balsz, Noah Cassie and Chris Clement. Flaugher gave up two hits and one walk and had one strikeout.
Devyn Hernandez was tonight’s winning pitcher with his one-run fifth inning. Hernandez allowed three hits as Nanaimo loaded the bases in the third, fourth and fifth innings, but only were able to score one run. The NightOwls left 12 runners on base tonight.
Mack Edwards and Will Franklin combined for a six up, six down sixth and seventh innings. Franklin surrendered the second run of the game in the eighth, but finished two innings allowing two hits and kept Bellingham up by one heading into the ninth.
Tyler Biddinger entered for the save and earned his second save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth capped off by a strikeout to move the Bells to 32-21. Along with Degroot, Bellingham had a perfect day from Rominic Quiban, who went 1-for-1 with three walks and a steal. Blake Balsz collected two hits with a double, walk and run scored.
With Victoria beating Edmonton tonight, the Bells can still claim first place in the North Division if they win tomorrow and the Riverhawks lose, which would create a three-way tie for first and the Bells hold tiebreakers over Victoria and Edmonton.
