Bells shutout NightOwls for series win
BELLINGHAM — The Bellingham Bells took a series win over the Nanaimo NightOwls after a 2-0 shutout victory on Thursday, June 11 at Joe Martin Field. Bellingham improved to 7-5 and won their third series of four this season.
JJ Martinson got the start for the Bells and pitched a great game. He went five innings with only two hits allowed and didn’t surrender a run. Martinson struck out four NightOwls en route to his second win of the season.
Bellingham got their two runs in the second and fourth innings. In the second, Jake Lyall tripled and scored on an RBI single by Dillon Moss. Tyler Peshke drove in the second run of the game on a fielder’s choice in the fourth that scored Lyall, who was hit by a pitch to leadoff the inning.
Evan Reece did his part in maintaining the shutout with a scoreless sixth inning. He struck out one batter and only allowed a hit. Aidan Colin pitched the seventh and eighth innings scoreless with the help of a 5-4-3 double play in the seventh.
Frank Willius pitched on Joe Martin Field’s mound for the first time this season and worked around a leadoff walk to earn his second save of the summer. Willius struck out the final two batters to secure the series win for Bellingham over Nanaimo.
Lyall and Matt Churchill tied for the team high in hits with two each. Bo Shinkle, Jorge Olivera-Gutierrez, Bryce Johnson and Moss each had one hit for eight total by Bellingham. The Bells pitching staff only walked three batters and struck out eight.
The Bells begin a three-game series against the Portland Pickles tomorrow at home with first pitch scheduled for 4:35 p.m.
