Edmonton takes down Bellingham Tuesday
EDMONTON — The Bellingham Bells dropped their first of three games at RE/MAX Field in Edmonton, Alberta, after an 8-6 loss to the Edmonton Riverhawks on Tuesday, June 30. Bellingham had 11 hits on offense, but allowed 14 to Edmonton in the loss.
Kole Laubach was peppered throughout his three-inning start as he allowed 10 hits for six runs without striking a batter out or walking anyone. The Bells only lead of the game was 2-1 after Rashad Hayes and KG Hattori singled in runs in the top of the second inning.
Edmonton had a four-run bottom of the second inning to lead 5-2. Jake Lyall hit a solo home run in the third, but the Riverhawks matched the run for a 6-3 lead following Laubach’s start. Jordan Chancellor pitched the next two frames scoreless and only allowed one hit.
Adam Jay tossed a scoreless sixth inning. Aspen Alexander hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh to make it 6-4. Bellingham’s defense allowed a run in the seventh on an error and Kenneth Johnson relieved Jay with one out in the inning after Jay had walked back-to-back batters following the costly error.
An error helped the Bells score in the top of the eighth and Dillon Moss had an RBI fielder’s choice, but Bellingham still trailed 7-6. A double and a triple by Edmonton made it 8-6 and Johnson was relieved by Thrasher Steed, who gained the final out in the bottom of the eighth. Bellingham went down 1-2-3 in the ninth to fall to 19-9.
Hattori, Moss and Noah Cassie all recorded two hits and Cassie and Moss both scored twice. Lyall scored twice after homering and reaching on a walk. The Bells pitching staff only had two strikeouts against Edmonton, but only issued three free passes.
Bellingham looks to bounce back at 6:05 p.m. tomorrow. The Bells need a win to even the series against the Riverhawks.
