Riverhawks take series in 8-3 win over Bells
EDMONTON — The Bellingham Bells lost their second game against the Edmonton Riverhawks 8-3 to drop the series at RE/MAX Field on Wednesday, July 1. Bellingham allowed 10 hits and committed three errors on defense in the Bells fourth loss over their last five games.
JJ Martinson was the starting pitcher and he allowed seven hits for three runs in 3-2/3 innings. The Riverhawks scored two runs in the second inning, one was unearned. After allowing a run-scoring double in the fourth, Martinson was lifted for Cole Anderson.
Bellingham’s first run came in the third inning on a fielder’s choice by Aspen Alexander that scored Tyler Peshke. Anderson walked two batters to start the fifth and allowed both runners to score later in the inning. One scored on an error, so it was 1-1/3 innings for Anderson with one hit and three walks allowed for one earned run.
Edmonton extended its lead to 8-1 against David Wiser in the seventh inning. The first two runs of the three-run frame scored on a double and a sacrifice fly, but the third came in on another Bells error. Wiser finished three innings of long relief with two hits and two walks allowed for three runs (two earned) and struck out four batters.
The Bells got two runs in the top of the eighth inning when Nate Johnson doubled to score Dillon Moss and Jaden Jackson sent Johnson home on a fielder’s choice.
Johnson was the only Bell with multiple hits going 2-for-4 at the plate with the team’s only extra-base hit. Alexander, Moss, Peshke and Noah Cassie were the other Bellingham players to collect one hit each. The Bells dropped to 19-10 after the loss.
Bellingham looks to salvage one game up north as the Bells are yet to be swept in a series this summer. They’ll look to continue that trend in tomorrow’s 6:05 p.m. game at RE/MAX Field in Edmonton.
