Bellingham ties series with Lefties after 8-2 win

BELLINGHAM — The Bellingham Bells took the second game of a three-game series against the Port Angeles Lefties with an 8-2 win on Saturday, July 11 at Joe Martin Field. The Bells had 10 hits on offense and the pitching staff recorded 10 strikeouts in the win.

The Bells took an early lead after an error by the Lefties scored Aspen Alexander, who had doubled one batter before. It established a 1-0 lead for Bellingham’s starter Parker Warner. Port Angeles tied the game in the third inning following two perfect innings from Warner.

Nate Johnson doubled in a run to score the first run of a three-run third inning. Alexander scored on the play after reaching base on a leadoff error. Jake Lyall swatted a sacrifice fly and Dillon Moss had an RBI double to give Bellingham a 4-1 lead.

David Wiser pitched in relief of Warner and had 2-2/3 scoreless innings. He earned his first win of the season after striking out two batters while working around three hits and two walks allowed.

The Bells posted their second three-run inning in the fifth. Rashad Hayes hit a sacrifice fly to begin the scoring. Alexander sent in two runs on a single to give Bellingham a 7-1 lead. 

Gavin Hasche relieved Warner during the sixth inning and pitched the full seventh without allowing a run. He posted two strikeouts and only allowed a hit-by-pitch. Bryce Johnson had an RBI single in the sixth to make it 8-1.

Cal Young struck out two batters but surrendered a solo home run in the eighth inning and Ben McKinnon closed the game with the help of two strikeouts in the ninth to cap an 8-2 win. The Bells and Lefties now face off in a rubber game at 1:35 p.m. on Sunday, July 12.

Alexander led the Bells going 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs. He also hit a double and stole a base. KG Hattori was the only other Bell to record two hits. Nate Johnson and Moss had doubles and both recorded a run and RBI.
