Bells Roundup May 7

Hey Bells fans, we have a new look here on our website but we’ve got the same content here for you in the weekly roundup. Our Bells were SLUGGING this week and with JUCO and DII & DIII seasons wrapping up that means some honors were handed out to our alumni. Lets dive into it all.

The Coyotes get honored

The Bellingham Bells have had a great connection to Cal St. San Bernardino and as a result some talented players have played for both the Bells and Coyotes over the last couple of seasons. Last season Jason Shedlock rocked the Bells uniform for the first time in his career and two seasons ago Daryl Ruiz showed out for Bellingham. This year they both went out on top as seniors on the All-CCAA First Team.

Oh man Roman! πŸ’£πŸ’£

It was only a matter of time until Roman Martin showed why he is a top prospect at UCLA. Despite a successful .300+ batting average as a freshman and a WCL All-Star selection last summer, Martin has impressed us all once again. On the season he’s batting .306 and has clobbered eight home runs with a .948 OPS. This past week he hit TWO 400+ foot home runs in back-to-back games including this one.

Nick Lewis sweeps Mountain West weekly awards

The Washington State left-handed pitcher is in his first playing year with the Cougs after redshirting last year. He’s thrown 63 innings in 12 starts this season, but there have been no innings better than the seven he twirled this week. In a Sunday start against Air Force Lewis struck out a career-high eight batters with no walks allowed and helped his team to a 10-2 win. As a result, he was named both Mountain West Pitcher and Freshman of the Week.

He’s got that Bower power

There’s something in the air at the Husky Ballpark this season. UW has found what they call “Montlake magic” and Colton Bower decided to play magician this past week against Iowa. Bower came to the plate in a 1-1 game with one out in the ninth and worked into a 3-2 count. The payoff pitch was crushed. Bower clobbered his sixth home run of the season as the Huskies walked off the Hawkeyes.

Fire us up Kyle Stowers!

Where do we begin to talk about this past week of baseball for Kyle Stowers. There’s a laundry list of things we could highlight so let’s do it. First off, Stowers was named the National League Player of the Week after hitting .421 with four homers, 10 RBI, a double, five runs scored, and a ridiculously 1.105 slugging percentage. In his Saturday game vs the Athletics, Stowers hit the game-tying home run in the third and then later hit the walk-off grand slam for the magical Marlins. Oh yeah, he also went 4-4 against the Dodgers where he ALSO hit two homers in the same game. Stowers must enjoy Miami because his first season in Florida has been remarkable after starting his career in Baltimore.
