Home run stings Bells in loss to Riverhawks
The Bellingham Bells lost to the Edmonton Riverhawks 6-4 Friday, June 6 at RE/MAX Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The Bells (4-3) will look for redemption to even the series vs the Riverhawks tomorrow at 6:05 p.m.
Nico Azpilcueta brought the first run home in the first inning on an RBI single that scored Chris Clement. Will Anderson took the mound in the bottom of the first and gave up a three-run home run against his University of British Columbia teammate Trent Lenihan.
Edmonton added to its lead with runs in the second and third innings to go up 5-1. Anderson exited his first start for the Bells this season allowing seven hits and five runs (three earned).
In the top of the fourth, Nate Kirkpatrick doubled to score Gavin Long and Noah Cassie brought in Kirkpatrick with an RBI single.
Chase Halvorson entered in the fourth and shined for three no-hit innings, blanking the Riverhawks while only allowing two walks.
The Bells scored one run in the seventh on an Azpilcueta sacrifice fly to bring the game to a one-run contest, 5-4.
Julian Herrera pitched a scoreless seventh and in the eighth Jared Hardie forced a ground ball to shortstop with two outs, but Brock Sell committed an error and a run scored to give Edmonton a two-run cushion.
Bobby Pierce Jr. drew a walk in the ninth to bring the tying run to the plate with one out, but the Bells couldn’t cash in and lost 6-4.
Azpilcueta was 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs to improve his average on the season to .292, which leads the team. Clement was 2-for-5 batting and scored a run. Anderson earned the loss as Bellingham dropped their second game in a row and Edmonton remained undefeated (4-0).
