Riverhawks cool off red-hot Bells

The Bellingham Bells lost their second game against the Edmonton Riverhawks 6-4 Wednesday, June 18 at RE/MAX Field. The Bells (12-5) will play the rubber match game of the series tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. before returning to Joe Martin Field for a three-game series against the Marion Berries this weekend.

Devyn Hernandez took the mound for the start and allowed two runs in the second inning to grant Edmonton an early lead. Alex Fernandes hit a sacrifice fly in the third to get Bellingham on the scoreboard.

Nate Kirkpatrick tied the game in the top of the fourth on an RBI groundout. Hernandez finished his start after 4.2 innings and allowed the two runs on three hits and walks while striking out six, which tied his season high.

Sam Petrocelli finished the fifth inning and was relived midway through the sixth by Hayden George, who made his season debut and finished a scoreless sixth.

George returned to the mound in the seventh and gave up the three runs that put Edmonton ahead 5-2. George finished his debut with two hits and walks allowed while earning the loss.

The Bells tried to rally in the eighth with two one-out RBIs from Noah Cassie and Rob Jacobsen. Ivan Rodriguez pitched the eighth inning and gave up one unearned run to give the Bells a chance in the ninth down 6-4. The Bells were sat down in order and their three-game winning streak came to an end.

The Bells were led by Jacobsen, who had another three-hit game and is 6-for-8 in his first two games as a Bell. Jacobsen also had an RBI while Cassie went 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run. Gavin Long had two hits as the Bells totaled eight base knocks in the loss.

Bellingham will look to win its sixth-straight series tomorrow with a 6:05 p.m. rubber match against Edmonton. The Bells will be back home Friday at 6:35 p.m. to take on the Marion Berries at Joe Martin Field.
