The Bellingham Bells lost their first series of the season after a 6-5 extra-innings loss to the Marion Berries Sunday, June 22 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. Bellingham (14-7) is still in first place in the North Division with a 1.5-game lead over Edmonton and Wenatchee.

Bellingham’s offense got back on track in this game and scored four early runs. In the bottom of the first inning Noah Cassie had a base hit that ricocheted off of the glove of the Marion third baseman to score a run. Rob Jacobsen hit into a double play with the bases loaded that gave the Bells a 2-0 lead after one.

In the bottom of the second, Brock Sell knocked in a run on a single to right field and was scored by Alex Fernandes on an RBI single.

Preston Watkins finished a five-inning start with a shutout and struck out five batters while only allowing a walk and two hits. Josh Flaugher relieved Watkins in the sixth and kept Marion off the scoreboard.

Flaugher allowed a walk to begin the seventh inning and Bobby Pierce Jr. committed an error on a possible double play ground ball that put two on with no outs for the Berries. Leahiaukai Araujo-Waiau got Marion on the board with an RBI double and Flaugher was relieved.

Sam Petrocelli inherited two runners on base and walked the bases loaded before then walking in a run and exiting the game after facing just two batters. With a 4-2 lead, Tyler Biddinger took over with still no outs in the inning and the bases loaded. Biddinger hit a batter on his first pitch out of the bullpen and forced a double play that tied the game, 4-4.

The Bells offense was unable to get a hit off a Berries reliever until the ninth inning. Biddinger was able to shut down Marion’s offense and force extra innings.

The West Coast League recently began implementing the tiebreaker rule that places a ghost runner on second base in extra innings. The Berries cashed in their runner against Biddinger and Chihiro Sato came out of the bullpen and gave up a sacrifice fly that scored one of Biddinger’s runners.

Down 6-4, the Bells scored their ghost runner on a two-out RBI from Kirkpatrick, but ultimately couldn’t complete the comeback and lost their first series of the 2025 season.

Sell led the Bells at the plate going 2-for-4 with two runs, a steal, walk and an RBI. Aiden Aguayo also tallied two hits as part of a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Andrew Lamb’s 11 game hitting streak came to an end after he went 0-for-4 at the plate with a walk.

The Bells have Monday off and will take on Wenatchee in a three-game series beginning at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 at Joe Martin Field. The Bells have six games left in the first half of the season and are trying to clinch an early postseason spot.
