Sox take rubber match in rainy loss for Bells
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Standings
The Bellingham Bells lost their third game versus the Wenatchee AppleSox 3-2 Thursday, June 26 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The Bells now travel to Kamloops for the final three games of the first half of the season against the NorthPaws.
The rain sprinkled down as Ivan Rodriguez got the start for Bellingham and surrendered a solo home run in the first inning. The Bells tied the game in the second inning on an RBI single from Aiden Aguayo. Nate Kirkpatrick gave Bellingham the lead in the bottom of the third with a sacrifice fly.
A failed bunt by Brock Sell that turned into a pop-up double play costed Bellingham a promising fourth inning. The AppleSox tied the game with a run against Rodriguez after Bobby Pierce Jr. committed a costly error to begin the inning.
Rodriguez finished his five inning no-decision start with five hits allowed for two runs (one earned) while striking out one and walking none. Miles Chandler entered in the sixth and immediately surrendered the lead.
Bellingham had a runner in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings but couldn’t tie the game. In the top of the seventh Chandler loaded the bases without recording an out and was relieved by Mack Edwards, who made his home debut.
Edwards escaped the bases-loaded jam by forcing two groundouts, one a double play, to escape a scoreless seventh. Edwards pitched the final three innings scoreless and kept Bellingham in the game with only two hits and a walk allowed.
In the bottom of the ninth with two outs, Gavin Long hit a fly ball that Wenatchee center fielder Jacob Croxford lost in the night sky. Long tried to stretch the hit into a double and was gunned out at second to lose the game.
The Bells (15-9) hold just a 1/2 game lead over Wenatchee (13-8) heading into the final three games of the North Division first half. The AppleSox have six games to catch Bellingham’s half-game lead in the standings.
Tomorrow Bellingham deploys Trevor Moore in the 6:35 p.m. matchup against the Kamloops NorthPaws. The Bells next home game is July 4 as the team is on the road for six-straight games versus Kamloops and Kelowna.
