Meffert’s clutch RBI leads to win vs Kelowna

The Bellingham Bells won their first game of the second half of the season with a 2-1 victory over the Kelowna Falcons Tuesday, July 1 at Elks Stadium in Kelowna, British Columbia. Noah Meffert lifted Bellingham to the win in the ninth on a sacrifice fly in what was a four-arm pitching duel.

Meffert also initiated the first offense of the game with an RBI in the first inning on a single that scored Aiden Aguayo, the same runner who’d touch home as the winning run eight innings later.

Cal Young got the start and the lefty worked through the Falcons lineup with ease but surrendered a run in the fourth when Zachary Wieder tagged him for the run the second time through the order.

Young went on to finish five innings with six hits and two walks allowed while striking out two Falcons. Mack Edwards entered in the sixth and would pitch the rest of the game scoreless.

Kelowna’s starter Gio De Graauw pitched all the way into the ninth inning before being relieved by Carson Kimball who finished the game. Both teams only used two arms for all nine innings.

There wasn’t many opportunities for the Bells vs Gio De Graauw as he allowed only three hits and struck out eight. The offense though broke through in the ninth against Kimball after Aguayo’s one-out double and Rob Jacobsen’s single to allow the fly ball from Meffert to score the winning run on a sacrifice.

Aguayo, who batted leadoff for the first time this season, was 2-for-4 at the plate with both Bells runs scored. The Bells other three hits went to Meffert, Jacobsen and Kirkpatrick. Blake Balsz also drew an impressive three walks.

The Bells look to earn a series win tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. against the Falcons. Bellingham (19-10) is first in the North Division overall and with Wenatchee’s second loss to Kamloops the Bells have won the first half of the season for the North and secured the number one seed in the WCL Playoffs come August.

Your Bells return home Friday, July 4 for a three-game series against the Port Angeles Lefties. Tickets for the series, the rest of the season and the WCL Playoffs are on sale at bellstickets.com, the ONLY place to buy Bells tickets this summer.
