Bells hold off Lefties for 20th win

The Bellingham Bells tied their three-game series against the Port Angeles Lefties with an 8-6 win Saturday, July 5 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The two North Division squads go head-to-head in a rubber match tomorrow, Sunday July 6 in a 1:35 p.m. day game.

Ty Van Dyke made his second start of the season and shined. He pitched his longest outing by going five deep and earning the win while striking out five batters and holding the Lefties scoreless allowing one walk and three hits.

The Bells offense got hot early and took advantage of three errors by the Lefties defense. In the first inning, Brock Sell stole home to get Bellingham on the board.

In the bottom of the second, the Bells took advantage of an error on Aiden Aguayo’s deep fly ball to left that extended the inning. Sell hit an RBI double and Rob Jacobsen followed that up win an RBI single. Andrew Lamb then hit a ground ball that led to an error by the first baseman and Jacobsen scored to lead 4-0.

Nate Kirkpatrick scored in the third on a wild pitch after reaching on a single and Sell picked up another RBI on a groundout. The Bells scored their seventh run in the fifth inning after Nico Azpilcueta doubled and was scored on an RBI groundout by Aguayo.

Sam Petrocelli took the mound in the sixth and allowed a three-run home run and was relieved after facing four batters without recording an out. Mile Chandler was only able to snag one out in the sixth as he allowed two runs to score and Dylan Huntsman was brought out of the pen to finish the inning.

After the Lefties scored six runs in the top of the sixth, Huntsman pitched a scoreless seventh and handed the ball to Mack Edwards for the eighth.

Bellingham gained some cushion in the eighth inning on a RBI single from Kirkpatrick to go ahead 8-6. Edwards stayed on the mound for the ninth and finished a six-out save retiring the Lefties in order with the aid of two strikeouts to gain the final two outs.

Brock Sell was on base five times tonight with one hit, two walks, a fielder’s choice and a hit-by-pitch. Sell gained two RBIs and scored two runs while swiping three bags. The Bells had nine hits with Kirkpatrick and Azpilcueta gaining two each.

Bellingham and Port Angeles finish their three game series tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. Colt Peterson is the Bells scheduled starter.

Bells win North Division to advance to WCL Championship

The Bellingham Bells are moving on in the West Coast League Playoffs after a 5-2 win over the Edmonton Riverhawks in the North Division Championship Game Tuesday, Aug 12 at RE/MAX Field in Edmonton, Alberta. The Bells will now face the Portland Pickles in the WCL title game Thursday to try and win Bellingham's first championship since 2014.
