The Bellingham Bells lost their first game of a three-game series against the Victoria HarbourCats 10-6 Friday, July 18 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The HarbourCats piled up eight runs over the seventh and eighth innings to win their 23rd game of the season.

Trevor Moore got the start for Bellingham and pitched three scoreless innings before surrendering the first run of the game in the top of the fourth on an error by himself.

Victoria doubled their lead in the fifth on an infield hit that resulted in an error by Aiden Aguayo on the throw to first and it was 2-0 HarbourCats.

Moore finished five innings with three hits and four walks allowed and two runs against him while striking out six. Lathan Haywood took over for Moore in the sixth.

The Bells only had one hit through the first five innings, but tallied two in the sixth off Victoria’s first pitcher out of the bullpen. Looking to knock in the Bells first runs, Andrew Lamb grounded into a double play to end that inning.

In the seventh, another run scored for Victoria on an error — the third time this game. The HarbourCats tallied three more off Haywood on five hits to lead 6-0. Chihiro Sato relieved Haywood for the eighth inning but found a similar fate to Haywood and allowed four runs.

Down 10-0, the Bells finally scored their first runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning on a two-RBI triple to the opposite field by Aguayo. Noah Meffert sent Aguayo home on a base hit up the middle and the Bells trailed 10-3.

After Jared Hardie pitched a scoreless ninth, the Bells flirted with a comeback as the first four batters in the inning were walked to score a run. Victoria made a pitching change with the bases loaded and no outs. Rob Jacobsen greeted the new arm with an RBI through the right-side gap in the infield and the Bells trailed by five, down 10-5.

Aiden Aguayo skied a fly out to center for a sacrifice that scored the sixth run of the game. After Andrew Lamb struck out on a borderline strike three in a full count, Meffert flew out to right to finish the game.

Aguayo led Bellingham with a 2-for-4 night at the plate that included three RBI, one run and a triple. Jacobsen collected three hits in the leadoff spot and scored one run with an RBI. Meffert was 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Bells ended with eight hits as a team.

Tomorrow Cal Young takes the mound for Bellingham and will face off against Victoria’s All-Star pitcher Thomas Bridges at 6:35 p.m. Tune in for game two of the series here or watch the game live here.
