Long slams Bells into 15-1 win
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Standings
The Bellingham Bells took down the NW Star Nighthawks in a dominating 15-1 win Saturday, July 26 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. Gavin Long’s third inning grand slam helped lift the Bells to another non-league win.
Jared Hardie got the start, his first of the season after coming in relief 11 times before tonight, and pitched four scoreless innings. The Bells first got on the scoreboard with Andrew Lamb’s sacrifice fly in the second inning.
Long began the scoring in the third inning with his grand slam, but the Bells added three more runs on RBIs from Lamb, Rob Jacobsen and Aiden Aguayo.
Up 8-0, the Bells added four more runs in the fourth inning after the Nighthawks pitching walked the bases loaded and allowed two to score on a bases-loaded walk and hit-by-pitch. After a run-scoring double play, Rob Jacobsen brought another run in to lead 12-0.
Miles Chandler took over in the fifth inning and went on to earn the win in three hitless relief innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Nico Azpilcueta crushed a two-run home run to put Bellingham ahead 14-0.
Ben McKinnon pitched the eighth inning and gave up the only run of the two games to the Nighthawks. Aguayo hit into a double play that scored a run in the bottom half of the eighth. Colt Peterson finished the game with a 1-2-3 ninth capped off by a game-ending strikeout.
The Bells took both wins with ease over the non-league NW Star Nighthawks. Along with Long’s grand performance, Rob Jacobsen had three hits while Azpilcueta collected two hits to go with his home run.
Tomorrow the Bells take on the Cascade Collegiate League Showcase Team at 1:35 p.m. to finish three-straight non-league games. The Bells are 28-17 and sit in first place in the North Division before the final nine games of the WCL season beginning Monday with three home games versus Kelowna.
