Bells finish non-league weekend on top
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Standings
The Bellingham Bells earned a 9-1 win over the Cascade Collegiate League Showcase Team Sunday, July 27 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. The Bells return to West Coast League action tonight, Monday July 28 against the Kelowna Falcons for a three-game series.
PJ Wendler made the start for the Bells and was given early run support as the Bells scored three in the first thanks to an RBI base hit from Blake Balsz and a two-RBI double by Noah Cassie.
After Wendler finished four scoreless innings, the Bells put up another run in the bottom of the fourth to lead 4-0 after Andrew Lamb singled to right field to score a run. Wendler had six strikeouts in his start with no walks allowed.
Johnny Montgomery pitched the fifth and sixth innings scoreless and racked up three punch outs while allowing three walks. The Bells scored two in the fifth on two wild pitches and added three more in the sixth on two bases-loaded walks and a run-scoring double play.
Up 9-0, Chihiro Sato took the ball on the hill for the next two innings with ease and only surrendered one run on the four hits he allowed while picking up one strikeout.
In the ninth, Cody Anderson, the Bells Associate Pitching Coach, entered the game and pitched for the Bells. It had been 10 years since he had previously pitched in a Bells uniform during his college career.
Anderson struck out the first batter he saw and then flashed the leather securing a groundout on a ball hit back towards him. After forcing a flyout to right, Anderson capped off the 9-1 win for the Bells with a 1-2-3 final inning.
With this weekend’s shenanigans finished, the Bells will finish the regular season with nine more WCL games including the upcoming three-game series that begins today at home.
Since the Bells won the first half of the season in the North Division, we are guaranteed a home playoff game August 9th, and tickets for that game are on sale at bellstickets.com. There are six more regular season home games on the schedule so come see your Bells finish the season strong.
