Bells battle and win Game 1 of WCL Playoffs
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Playoff Schedule
The Bellingham Bells opened the WCL Playoffs in the North Divisional Series with a Game 1 win over the Wenatchee AppleSox 7-6 Friday, August 8 at Paul Thomas Sr. Field in Wenatchee, Wash. The AppleSox never led in the game and Bellingham is one win away from advancing to the North Divisional Championship Game.
Trevor Moore got the start and set Bellingham up for success by gaining the first 10 outs perfect before allowing a single in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Bells offense gave him run support beginning with an early first inning run after loading the bases versus Wenatchee starter Evan Canfield.
Bellingham loaded the bases again in the second and 2025 Bell of the Year Andrew Lamb drove in two on a base hit to right field. Moore faced traffic in the fourth and fifth innings, but escaped unscathed and Bellingham led 3-0 entering the sixth.
The AppleSox made noise in the sixth after a leadoff error followed by a walk, a run-scoring error and a single. Wenatchee scored their second run on a sacrifice fly and tied the game on a base hit that deflected off of Moore. After some unlucky bounces and errors, Moore was taken out of his 5.2-inning start with three unearned runs scored against him on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts.
The Bells offense immediately responded with a four-run seventh inning that featured three extra-base hits by Bellingham including a two-run home run by Blake Balsz that put the Bells up 7-3.
Josh Flaugher walked three batters to start the seventh and was relieved by Colt Peterson who allowed two to score. Flaugher pitched the last out in the sixth and the first in the seventh allowing two runs on three walks and no hits with one strikeout.
Peterson made easy work of the AppleSox in the eighth, holding onto a two-run lead up 7-5. The Bells loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but they couldn’t extend the lead. After allowing a solo home run to begin the bottom of the ninth, Peterson finished his eight-out save and gave Bellingham a Game 1 win over Wenatchee.
Of the Bells nine hits and seven runs tonight, Andrew Lamb collected two hits and two RBIs. Aiden Aguayo was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and his UCLA teammate Blake Balsz was 1-for-3 with his two-run home run and three total RBIs. Noah Cassie also had multiple hits going 2-for-5 with a run and an RBI.
The Bells and AppleSox both travel to Bellingham where they will play Game 2 and Game 3 (if necessary) at Joe Martin Field beginning Saturday, August 9 at 6:35 p.m. The Bells need one win to advance to the next round where they will face either the Edmonton Riverhawks on the road at RE/MAX Field or the Victoria HarbourCats at home at Joe Martin Field.
