Quiban sends Bellingham to North Division Championship
Box Score | Bellingham Bells Roster | WCL Playoff Schedule
The Bellingham Bells are moving on in the West Coast League Playoffs after a 4-3 walk-off win over the Wenatchee AppleSox Sunday, August 10 at Joe Martin Field in Bellingham, Wash. Rominic Quiban delivered the walk-off hit leading to a play at the plate where Blake Balsz slid around a tag to keep Bellingham’s season alive.
The Bells will now play the Edmonton Riverhawks at RE/MAX Field in Edmonton, Alberta Tuesday, August 12 with a trip to the WCL Championship Game on the line. Bellingham has made the North Division title game for four straight seasons after tonight’s win.
Carter Herrera shined in his six-inning start tonight. The Cal St. San Bernardino right-handed pitcher allowed two runs in the fourth and finished his quality start with three hits and two walks allowed while striking out two.
Dylan Huntsman tossed a scoreless seventh with only a walk allowed with a strikeout. Miles Chandler sat the AppleSox down in order in the top of the eighth.
Bellingham’s offense struggled to come around, they only got their second hit in the seventh inning, but were shutout for the first seven innings tonight. In the eighth that all changed when Noah Figuered and Brock Sell both doubled to drive in the first run on the game. Sell moved up to third on a sacrifice bunt by Aiden Aguayo and Sell scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
In the ninth Chandler allowed the go-ahead run to Wenatchee on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. PJ Wendler took over and finished the inning, limiting the damage to just one.
With the Bells season down to their final three outs, Blake Balsz led off the ninth with a single and Kirkpatrick followed with a double to put the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. Quiban delivered the sacrifice fly to tie the game 3-3. Rob Jacobsen then delivered a base hit to center field that send Kirkpatrick from second to home, but he was thrown out at the plate.
The game entered extra-innings for a second-straight night and Wendler marveled in the top of the 10th going 1-2-3. Andrew Lamb drew a leadoff walk, but was picked off at first base and after Noah Cassie popped up it looked like the game was headed to an 11th inning.
With two outs in the bottom of the 10th, Balsz was hit by a pitch and Kirkpatrick singled. Now with runners on first and second, Quiban delivered another clutch swing. With a base hit up the middle, Balsz came flying around third and the play at the plate was late as Balsz swam around the tag to send the AppleSox home and for Bellingham to keep the 2025 season going.
Tonight was the final home game of the 2025 season for Bellingham as Edmonton hosts the North Divisional Championship Game since they were the best team in the North based on overall record. If the Bells go to the WCL Championship, either Portland or Corvallis will host as they too hold better overall records over the Bells.
Quiban was the hero tonight, but both Balsz and Kirkpatrick played huge roles down the stretch will Balsz going 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored and Kirkpatrick having three hits tonight including a double. Rob Jacobsen, Noah Figuered and Brock Sell all collected hits in the effort as Sell drove in a run and scored one with Figuered also touching home once tonight.
