Bells handed first lost after tough sixth inning
KELOWNA — The Bellingham Bells couldn’t clinch a sweep over the Kelowna Falcons as the Bells dropped the getaway game 13-7 on Sunday, May 31. The Bells head home with a 2-1 record and will play their first home game on Tuesday, June 2 against the Wenatchee AppleSox at 6:35 p.m.
Kelowna scored first on Sunday with two runs in the first inning. The Bells answered with a four-run second inning. The scoring began with an RBI from Taylor Davis that scored Jorge Olivera-Gutierrez. Matt Churchill scored on a wild pitch after reaching on an error earlier in the inning. Aspen Alexander hit a sacrifice fly and Tyler Peshke had an RBI single.
The Falcons’ Matthew Pena hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the inning and Kelowna chased Bellingham’s starter Kenneth Johnson out of the game. Evan Reece finished the inning with no more damage, but the Bells trailed 5-4.
Churchill tied the game with an RBI single that scored Olivera-Gutierrez, who doubled and took third on a wild pitch prior to Churchill’s at-bat. Kelowna retook the lead with a run in the bottom of the inning off Reece. Reece finished 1-2/3 innings with two hits and one run allowed.
Olivera-Gutierrez hit his second double of the game to drive in a run and retake the lead, 6-5, in the top of the fourth inning. Jordan Chancellor struck out the side in the fifth inning.
The Falcons posted seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pena hit a grand slam for his second home run of the game. Bellingham’s Silas Stenerson surrendered seven hits and a walk during the inning and committed one error.
Lane Simonsen pitched the next two frames scoreless for the Bells, but Bellingham only got one run back on an RBI double from Alexander in the eighth inning.
The Bells were led in hits by Olivera-Gutierrez, who scored twice and drove in a run. Churchill, Alexander and Ty Rusko all had two hits each. Tyson McGrorty was tied for the team high in runs scored with two and Alexander led the Bells in RBI with two.
Bellingham will host its first game of the season at Joe Martin Field on Tuesday, June 2 at 6:35 p.m. The Bells take on North Division rival Wenatchee in a three-game series for the first three home games of the season. Tickets are available exclusively at bellstickets.com.
