Bells rout Lefties 8-1 on Tuesday

PORT ANGELES — The Bellingham Bells began their three-game road series against the Port Angeles Lefties with an 8-1 win Tuesday, June 16 at Civic Field in Port Angeles. Three Bells relievers didn’t allow a hit for the final five innings and Bellingham’s offense had 10 total hits in the win.

It didn’t take long for the scoring to start for the Bells. In the top of the second inning, two runs scored on an error and Jake Lyall drove in a run on an RBI single. It gave Bellingham’s starter Lathan Haywood run support and the right-handed pitcher threw his first four innings scoreless.

Another error by the Lefties gave Bellingham a run in the fifth inning. Aspen Alexander walked with the bases loaded to score a run and KG Hattori doubled for two more runs that gave Bellingham a 7-0 lead after the top of the fifth.

Haywood allowed a pair of doubles in the bottom of the inning, which gave Port Angeles its only run of the game. Cole Anderson debuted and finished the inning with Bellingham leading 7-1. Anderson 

Noah Cassie hit an RBI single in the top of the seventh to stretch the Bells lead to 8-1. After two outs gained and three walks issued by Anderson, Evan Reece finished off the seventh by stranding two Lefties on base.

Reece pitched the next two innings with only a walk surrendered and finished 2-1/3 innings with two strikeouts. Thrasher Steed capped off the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning that featured a pair of strikeouts.

Lyall led the Bells with three hits and he scored a run while also collecting an RBI. Hattori was 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI. Cassie, Rashad Hayes, Matt Churchill, Jorge Olivera-Gutierrez and Tyler Peshke all had hits as Bellingham improved to 10-6.

The Bells and Lefties play their second of two games tomorrow, June 17 at 6:35 p.m.
