Bells win, but lose first half divisional race
VICTORIA — The Bellingham Bells were able to stave off the sweep from the Victoria HarbourCats with a 10-2 win on Sunday, June 28, but Wenatchee claimed the North Division first half title — and guaranteed playoff spot — with a win and tiebreaker advantage over Bellingham.
The Bells avoided a sweep by scoring their most runs of the series and allowing no hits for the final five innings. The offense crushed three home runs and had five extra-base hits in the getaway game.
Seddrick Henderson had three scoreless innings in his start, but was tagged for a two-run home run in the fourth. He struck out two batters.
Bellingham got their first run of the game in the top of the fifth when Aspen Alexander hit a solo home run, his second long ball of the series and third of the summer.
Robby Zimmerman pitched in relief and was lights out. The lefty had four strikeouts in three innings and didn’t allow a baserunner except for an error in the fifth.
The Bells had seven hits for six runs in the seventh inning. Noah Cassie had a three-run homer, Jake Lyall recorded an RBI single and Aspen Alexander doubled in two runs.
A three-run home run by Bryce Johnson in the eighth inning made it 10-2 as Johnson hit his first home run of the season. Lathan Haywood pitched a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning and Thrasher Steed closed up the win with a hitless ninth inning.
Lyall, Johnson, Alexander, Nate Jonhson, Jaden Jackson and Tyler Peshke all had two-hit games. Cassie, Alexander and Bryce Johnson each had three RBI. Lyall, Nate Johnson and Bryce Johnson scored twice each.
Bellingham now travels to Edmonton for a three-game series against the Riverhawks. Bellingham, at 19-8, now sets its sights on the second half of the season with a 4.5-game lead over the Kelowna Falcons for the second half playoff berth.
It’s Game Time!
