Bells fry the Fish Sticks
BELLINGHAM — The Bellingham Bells took a non-league win over the DubSea Fish Sticks with a 10-4 victory Wednesday, July 15 at Joe Martin Field. The reigning West Coast League champions took down the defending Pacific International League champions with ease.
DubSea took the game’s first lead with a two-run first inning against Bellingham’s starter Lathan Haywood. The Bells got one run back in the bottom of the inning on an RBI ground out by KG Hattori.
Bellingham flipped the scoreboard with a six-run third inning. Hattori had an RBI single and Bo Shinkle drove in a run on a hit. Tyler Peshke got two runs in with a single and Shinkle scored on a wild pitch. Rominic Quiban had an RBI single to cap the big inning with Bellingham leading 7-2.
Haywood finished a three-inning start with five hits and three walks allowed. He struck out one batter and Adam Jay pitched the next two innings of relief. The Fish Sticks scored two runs off Jay in his first inning, but Bellingham scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a wild pitch to lead 8-4.
The Bells added to their lead with a run-scoring single by Bryce Johnson. Jay earned the win in two innings and gave up four hits and two walks while striking out four. Will Crain tossed the sixth and seventh innings and struck out one batter with two hits against him.
Churchill hit a solo home run in the seventh to make it 10-4. Cal Young didn’t allow a run in the eighth despite walking two batters and he struck one Fish Stick out. Gavin Hasche finished off the win with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.
Bellingham had 14 hits in the non-league win led by Churchill’s three that included a home run and he reached in all five plate appearances. Quiban was 3-for-5 with an RBI. Hattori went 2-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rashad Hayes had a pair of hits with a double and two runs scored. Bryce Johnson was 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored. Peshke drove in two runs with a lone hit.
The Bells host Gunderson Baseball for the final non-league game of the season. Bellingham will be on the road this weekend facing the Kamloops NorthPaws. Get your tickets for tomorrow’s 6:35 p.m. game at bellstickets.com.
