Three home runs lift Bells over Berries 14-6
SALEM — The long ball was a key part of the Bellingham Bells 14-6 win over the Marion Berries on Tuesday, July 28 at Chemeketa Community College in Salem, Oregon. Matt Churchill, KG Hattori and Dillon Moss each had a multi-run home run in the win as Bellingham improved to 29-17.
Churchill’s three-run blast came first in the first inning as he crushed a three-run home run to start an eight-run inning for Bellingham. After Moss was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, KG Hattori hit a grand slam to make it 8-0 after one.
The Berries got two runs back off Bellingham’s starter Cole Anderson. Anderson didn’t record an out in the third and after surrendering two runs he was pulled with two runners on base. Those runs ended up scoring against reliever Adam Jay, so Anderson’s final line was two innings pitched with six runs (four earned) on one hit and five walks.
Jay only pitched the third and walked two batters while striking out one and he allowed one hit, but no runs. The Bells led 8-6 entering the fourth.
After a bottom of the fourth tossed scoreless by Gavin Hasche, Moss hit a three-run home run in the fifth to extend Bellingham’s lead to 11-6. Hasche pitched three scoreless innings and has now pitched 14 innings without allowing a run. He picked up his second win of the summer after not allowing a hit and only issuing one walk.
Bo Shinkle knocked in one run in the sixth to make it 12-6. Hattori picked up his fifth RBI of the game on a base hit in the seventh. Ben McKinnon didn’t allow a run in the seventh and eighth innings as he struck out three Berries while allowing two hits and a walk.
Rominic Quiban hit a sacrifice fly in the eighth, which gave the Bells their winning scoreline of 14-6. Thrasher Steed closed out the win in the ninth inning.
Hattori had three hits and a team-leading five RBI. Moss recorded four RBI and three runs on three hits and he had the hard half of a cycle with a triple and home run. Churchill picked up two knocks and had three RBI and three runs scored. Bellingham had 13 hits as a team with seven extra-base hits.
The Bells and Berries clash again Wednesday night in Salem at 6:35 p.m. Bellingham looks to continue its positive momentum as they fight for a top seed in the West Coast League playoffs.
