Bells Announce New Youth Initiative in Whatcom County

December 10, 2024 — [Bellingham, WA] — The Bellingham Bells are excited to announce the creation of a new youth baseball initiative in Whatcom County, the Junior Bells Development Program (JBDP). The program aims to offer a high-quality baseball development program alongside an affordable and accessible experience.

Through JBDP, the Bells organization will offer leagues, camps, and other learning opportunities with a majority of offerings aimed toward young athletes with limited prior exposure to baseball.

Most notably, JBDP will feature a spring youth baseball league serving boys and girls ages 5 to 8 in its first year. The league promises to offer a safe, inclusive space where the youngest baseball players can grow, compete, and thrive and is designed to cater to young athletes who are eager to learn about baseball, while also focusing on important life lessons such as teamwork, leadership, and perseverance.

“We’re incredibly excited to formalize the work we do in the youth baseball community through the Junior Bells Development Program, and to bring this new league to life,” said Bells President/GM, Stephanie Morrell. “Our organizational mission is to create a positive environment where kids not only get to play the sport they love but also develop lifelong skills. Baseball is a great way to teach teamwork, discipline, and responsibility, and we want to ensure that every player, no matter their experience level, has a chance to play the game we all love.”

In its first year, the league will offer two divisions based on age, 5-6 year olds and 7-8 year olds. Practices and games will be held at Joe Martin Field, the field where the Bellingham Bells call home, as well as other fields within the Civic Athletic Complex. With accessibility in mind, the 10-week program will cost $150. Scholarships will be available through an application process, with preference being given to fully fund scholarships for any student who qualifies for free or reduced lunch in their school district.

Each participant will receive:

  • A Bells Branded Team Jersey
  • A Bells Branded Hat
  • A Bellingham Bells Kids Club Membership
  • Recognition at a Bellingham Bells Baseball Game

Registration for the league is open now, and players can sign up through the league’s official website at JuniorBells.com. Space is limited, so interested families are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible.

“We believe that sports should be accessible to all kids, regardless of their background or skill level,” said Morrell. “We’re committed to creating an atmosphere where players feel supported and challenged, and we can’t wait to see how this league helps kids grow both on and off the field.”
