Bells Welcome Pack of UNR Freshmen

The Bells are excited to announce three freshmen from the University of Nevada, Reno will join the 2022 roster. LHP Matthew Fike, LHP Boon Fay and second baseman / shortstop JR Freethy will journey to Bellingham this summer.

“We are excited for this new partnership with Nevada baseball,” Bells general manager Stephanie Morrell said. “This is a strong program in the Mountain West Conference. We have known Coach Buckley and Coach Bruce for some time and are really looking forward to having their athletes in Bellingham this summer.”

Fike graduated from Casteel High School in Queen Creek, Arizona last year. He was ranked the No. 6 left hander in Arizona at the time. He stands at 6-foot-1, 195-pounds and will provide power on the mound.

“Matt is an impressive LHP with solid command,” Morrell said. “He has proven the ability to throw strikes consistently. Everything we know about Matt has us very excited that he will be joining the Bells this summer.”

Boon Fay will bring a valuable pitch mix and provide another strong arm this summer. He is a 2021 graduate from Eagle Rock High School in Eagle Rock, Calif.

“Boon is a LHP with a tremendous amount of upside,” Morrell said. “He has continued to show growth both in pitch development and velocity and we are really looking forward to him being part of our staff this summer.”

Freethy graduated from Granite Bay High School in Granite Bay, Calif., last year and has valuable experience at multiple infield positions.

“JR is a versatile player who will give the Bells some flexibility as a talented middle infielder who can also play third if needed,” Morrell said.  “JR is a player we expect to make an instant impact to the Bells lineup with his speed and ability to handle the bat.”

These three Wolf Pack freshmen will have one season of college ball under their belts before joining the Bells this summer.
