A home opening win over Kamloops
The Bellingham Bells won their home opener against the Kamloops NorthPaws in a 3-0 shutout that gave the Bells a 3-1 record to begin the season and handed Kamloops their first loss of 2025 Tuesday, June 3 at Joe Martin Field.
The only runs of the game were scored in the first inning after Gavin Long walked after being in a two-strike count. Brock Sell laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt and the NorthPaws defense committed an error that put runners on the corners. Sell stole second and Alex Fernandes hit an infield single to score Long.
A wild pitch allowed Sell to score and double the Bells lead. Nico Azpilcueta and Nate Kirkpatrick walked and Noah Cassie hit a line drive single to right field to score Azpilcueta.
Cal Young, who was a WCL All-Star as a relief pitcher last summer, started this game and pitched three scoreless innings. He struck out the side in the third inning and exited the home-opener start.
In the fourth, Jared Hardie entered and nearly allowed a run after a flyout to left field sent a NorthPaw tagging from third home. Fernandes, who made the out in left, fired a ball home and gunned the runner out at the plate.
Hardie was relieved in the fifth after allowing two runners into scoring position with one out. Jacob Parks entered and forced a groundout to first base and Azpilcueta fired a throw home to tag the runner out at the plate. Parks went on to escape the fifth and pitch a scoreless sixth, which earned him the win.
Tyler Biddinger made his second appearance this summer and held the NorthPaws scoreless over two innings. Loreto Siniscalchi entered in the ninth and collected his second save of the summer.
The Bells had just three hits with the two RBI singles in the first by Fernandes and Cassie and a double by Kirkpatrick in the eighth. But the Bells tossed their first shutout of the season and held Kamloops to two hits. Overall the pitching staff had seven strikeouts in the win.
Tomorrow the Bells will look to earn the series win over the NorthPaws at Joe Martin Field. The game begins at 6:35 p.m. and tickets are still on sale.
